An area of approximately 5.2 square miles, the North Shore contains approximately 21 sites that the Environmental Protection Agency or residents have identified as contaminated. All of them sit within 70 feet of homes and apartment buildings. Recently, the EPA designated the North Shore one of its ten “Environmental Justice Showcase Communities”.

In the Spring semester of 2011, the students of Queens College’s course, The Changing Urban Environment” worked with some residents on the North Shore to research, compile and map the data on this website. The project is now ongoing as we continue to refine and expand it, in the hopes that it will contribute to the struggle for Environmental Justice on Staten Island’s North Shore!
